Japanese Tea Etiquette

Certain rules have to adhered to for Japanese tea etiquette, these are listed below.

  1. Always be prompt for the tea ceremony
  2. Remove your shoea when entering your host’s house. He may provide you with a pair of slippers.
  3. Make sure you drink all your tea and eat everything which is offered to you
  4. Do not drink tea from the front side so turn your cup of tea slightly to one side
  5. Smoking is usually a no no in th tea ceremony.
  6. For the tea ceremony great care and attention to fine detail like flowers and food have been carefully selected by your host and each has a special meaning. Treat all things with great respect and compliment your host. This is very important for the guest to do.
  7. After a few days have passed 2-3 days call or write a note to your host expressing your appreciation of the tea ceremony. This is known as korei or “thanking afterwards”.
